BEING GOD’S PEOPLE

Calling churchwardens, leaders, Readers….anyone in local churches who wants the church to have a healthy and vital future, for the sake of God’s world.

We live in a society where consumerism is central, and many fear for their livelihoods. Successful families can be overwhelmed by activities but have little sense of a healthy direction. The church’s task of showing the generosity and presence of God can be overlaid by anxiety about stolen lead, paying the share or dwindling numbers.

Now is the time to notice that disciple-making is top of the agenda. Together, God’s people, the baptized and baptizing community – catholic, liberal, charismatic or evangelical – have an urgent task. From its earliest times the church has sought to form disciples after the pattern of the life, teaching and healing of Jesus Christ.

The Revd Robin Greenwood and Sue Hart, from St Mary’s Monkseaton, have just produced a new parish resource called BEEING GOD’S PEOPLE The Confirmation and Discipleship Handbook (SPCK 2011). This resource is biblical, practical and imaginative and faithful to the church’s teaching. Challenging both individualism and consumerism, Robin and Sue invite local churches of all denominations to making such community-forming central to the mission and evangelization work of congregations supported by clergy, Readers and many others.

Over the weekend of February 10-12 in 2012 they’re inviting you to spend time at Shepherd’s Dene praying, worshipping and working out how in different places this agenda can become more vital and realistic. Come and be part of it!
